At Maurizio Barber Shop you can also choose a massage. We have several. Two of the most requested are the decontracting massage and the relaxing massage.
If it is your first time, it may not be clear which to choose. In this guide we explain the differences in a simple way. This is not medical advice: these are general indications to help you find your way.
An important premise
Our massages are well-being treatments. They are performed by Michela, our beautician. They are not meant to cure illnesses or health problems, and they do not replace a medical visit.
If you have pain that lasts over time, a particular health condition, a recent injury or any doubts, we recommend talking to your doctor first. The doctor is the right person to tell you what you can and can’t do.
What they have in common
Both massages take place in a quiet environment, with time dedicated to you. In both, Michela works with her hands. In both you can say if the pressure feels too strong or too light.
The goal and the way of working change. Let’s see how.
The relaxing massage
The relaxing massage is designed to give you a break. It usually has a slow rhythm and softer, more enveloping movements. The idea is to take a moment to switch off from the day.
It can be a good choice if:
- you want to stop for a while and relax;
- you prefer light or medium pressure;
- it is your first massage experience;
- you like the idea of a calm moment, without too much intensity.
In our list of services you will find it as Relax.
The decontracting massage
The decontracting massage has a firmer character. The pressure is usually stronger and the work focuses on certain areas of the body, such as shoulders, neck and back. These are the areas where many people feel stiffness, after hours at a desk or on their feet.
It can be a good choice if:
- you like firmer pressure;
- you feel the tension of a working day and want a more targeted treatment;
- you already know what you prefer and have tried massages in the past.
In our list you will find it as Decontracting.
Please note: the name is not a promise of results. Every person is different and may feel different effects. Massage is a well-being experience, not a therapy.
A small table, in words
- Relax: slow rhythm, soft movements, lighter pressure. Goal: to switch off.
- Decontracting: firmer movements, stronger pressure, attention to areas of tension. Goal: a more targeted treatment.
How to choose
There is no answer that is the same for everyone. Here are some questions to ask yourself.
- What do I need today: to stop, or firmer work?
- What pressure do I usually prefer?
- Do I have areas where I feel more tension?
- How much time do I have?
- Have I had a massage before? What did I like and what not?
If you are undecided, you can start with the lighter one. During the treatment you can always tell Michela if you prefer more or less pressure.
Talking with Michela
The best thing, before deciding, is to talk with Michela. You can do it when you arrive, before starting. She listens to you, asks a few questions and helps you choose.
Some useful things to tell her:
- if it is your first time;
- if you have areas that bother you or are sensitive;
- if you have allergies, in particular to oils or skin products;
- if you have a health condition she should be aware of;
- what kind of pressure you prefer.
Everything you say helps make the treatment more suitable for you. If something is wrong, halfway through the massage, say so straight away: Michela will change the way she works.
When it is better to see a doctor
Massage is not suitable for every situation. If you have one of these conditions, talk to your doctor first:
- strong, sudden or persistent pain;
- a recent injury;
- back or joint health problems;
- circulation problems;
- pregnancy;
- an illness or ongoing therapy;
- irritated skin or lesions in the treatment area.
This list is not complete. If in doubt, always ask your doctor first. Michela can tell you what is possible in the shop, but she cannot give medical advice.
How to prepare
To arrive ready, a few tips are enough.
- Arrive a few minutes early, without rushing.
- Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to take off and put back on.
- Avoid very large meals just before.
- If you wear jewellery, take it off before starting.
- Turn off or silence your phone, if you can.
After the massage
After the treatment, take a few minutes before getting up and going back to your things. Many people prefer not to have intense commitments straight away.
It can help to drink some water and move calmly. If something seems strange or bothers you, talk to Michela and, if needed, to your doctor.
Massage and barber shop together
You can also combine a massage with the rest of your visit. For example, if you want to take a morning or an afternoon for yourself, you can combine a haircut and a massage. You just need to organise the times carefully. When you book on Treatwell, check the availability of the services you are interested in.
In short
- The relaxing massage is slower and softer: it helps you switch off.
- The decontracting massage is firmer and focused on areas of tension.
- They are well-being treatments, not cures.
- Talk to Michela before choosing.
- For any health problem, see your doctor.
We look forward to seeing you at Maurizio Barber Shop, at Via Benedetto Croce 8 in Foggia. You can book on Treatwell.
